Futile Combat
Originally, the idea behind Futile Combat was to make a spoof of the popular beat ‘em up videogame genre. Using this as a starting point, the idea somehow developed into an off the wall medieval comedy featuring the kind of insane characters you'd normally find in a beat 'em up game. A knight, an old man, a beautiful woman and a ninja. Many a genre was crossed and the concept of age and time was completely ignored. Featuring more mad scenarios than you can shake a stick at, the results were amazing, even if we do say so ourselves. The BBC comedy department didn't think so but then if you've seen a BBC comedy you'll know they don't produce anything unless it's dirt cheap to make...this certainly would not be.
STORY
The story is made up of four interwoven, yet individual tales. These stories all follow characters en route to a tournament, and their trials and tribulations.
Futile Combat starts with the death of a once great warrior, Tytanus. As the holder of a legendary stone with the power to control the elements, he requests on his death bed that the stone be passed on to another warrior.
The stone, or ‘coquina’ is quite obviously dangerous in the wrong hands and Tytanus is keen for his son, Ivor, NOT to have it.
Upon Tytanus’ death, his trusted friend and travelling companion, Roget decides to hold a tournament and allow the greatest warriors to battle it out for the right to bare the stone. Ivor, the lazy, spoilt son of Tytanus, resents this and wishes the stone for himself.
Once this is established, the first four episodes concentrate on the journeys and the training regimes of the characters as they either prepare for, or travel to the tournament. These individual stories feature Token, Nigel, Sir Vistabint, Riyumi and Nunoo (The Heroes). The relationship between Ivor and Roget is also a major feature.
Episode five is where the tournament begins. Following a first round of calamities and hollow victories for the heroes, the battle arena is then attacked by Ivor, who’s stolen the coquina. Hell bent on destroying anyone who can stop him, Ivor pelts the battle square with lightning.
It is only now that the main characters actually meet, apart from the odd crossing of paths. The final episode, concentrates on the heroes banding together at Roget’s request to put a stop to Ivor’s reign of terror.
Throughout the six episodes, Futile Combat is littered with unlikely and ridiculous situations, all with hilarious consequences. There is also a whole host of strange and bizarre characters along the way, all with their own quirky idiosyncrasies.
OUR VERDICT: In summary, Futile Combat is a brilliant mixture of slapstick, parodies, sarcasm and silliness and should not be taken seriously at any point. Purely intended as entertainment, Futile Combat should offend no-one and entertain everyone.
